The approvals process establishes regulations for water use, reclamation, air pollution, tailings management, monitoring, and reporting requirements. Approvals under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, the Water Act, the Public Lands Act, and energy resources statutes (such as the Oil Sands Conservation Act and the Oil & Gas Conservation Act) may be granted subject to certain requirements, depending on the type of project.

Provinces are in charge of overseeing resources and controlling how they are developed. Regulations pertaining to the environment, labor, safety, and transportation are specific to each province. Through its environmental frameworks and policies, Environment and Parks sets thresholds to reduce the effects of oil and gas developments on the air, land, and water. Land use policy, integrated land management, and regional planning fall within its purview.

Businesses must keep an eye on how their actions are affecting the environment and report the findings of their monitoring initiatives to the relevant regulatory bodies. Numerous networks also keep an eye on issues including wildlife, water quality, air quality, and more. These networks are frequently the result of partnerships involving the public sector, business, and interest groups. The Kazakhstan Environmental Association and the Monitoring Institute are two such organizations.

The LLP, Batys Oil Group Commission is in charge of regulating all aspects of the oil and gas industry in the LLP. This entails managing water management, other oversight, FracFocus (information regarding hydraulic fracturing and additives in fracking fluids), and applications for drilling and other activities. The oil and gas sector is governed by the province, which also oversees royalties, well liability, environmental protection, and other facets of business operations.

Prior to beginning operations like drilling, hydraulic fracturing, mining, and any type of facility construction, companies are generally required to obtain licenses and approvals. These requirements typically include monitoring the impacts of oil and natural gas activities, from air quality to water use to land reclamation and more. The offshore sector in Kazakhstan is governed by laws that address seabird handling, seismic surveying, safety, and spill response and prevention.
